Meet Oscar: A Player, a Coach, a Storyteller, and Part of Our Field to Field Family

Some people have a way of making everyone around them feel like they've known each other forever. For us, Oscar is one of those people.

One of the greatest gifts of Field to Field has been the people we've met along the way. People who started out as partners in a baseball project and somehow became friends, teammates, and family.

And we can't wait to introduce you to someone who has become a very special part of our journey.

Meet Oscar Gatume!

At just 20 years old, Oscar has already made quite a name for himself in Kenya's baseball community. A talented athlete, a three-time Nairobi Community Baseball Champion, a dedicated coach, and now one of the newest members of our Field to Field team, Oscar brings something special to everything he does.

But if you ask us what makes Oscar so extraordinary, it isn't his accomplishments on the baseball field.

It's his heart.

A Love for Baseball That Goes Beyond the Field

Baseball has an incredible way of bringing people together, no matter where they're from or how different their lives may look.

Oscar is living proof of that.

Growing up playing baseball in Kenya, he developed not only a passion for the game but also a desire to share it with others. Today, he's helping encourage and mentor the next generation of Kenyan players, showing young athletes what's possible through hard work, determination, and a genuine love of the sport.

What we love about Oscar is that he understands baseball is about so much more than winning games.

It's about friendship, teamwork, confidence, opportunity, and having somewhere you belong.

And if you've ever watched him interact with the kids, you can see just how naturally that comes to him.

He has the kind of energy that makes people want to be around him. He's funny, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and always ready to jump into whatever needs to be done.

Whether he's playing, coaching, helping with our programs, or capturing a moment on camera, Oscar brings his whole heart.

From Nairobi to Our Field to Field Family

During our August trip to Kenya, Oscar became an important part of our experience.

He spent time with our family, helped connect us with the baseball community, and became a friend to Carson and Clay.

Watching friendships develop between young people who have grown up thousands of miles apart has been one of the most meaningful parts of this entire project.

Different countries. Different childhoods. Different experiences.

But give them a baseball, and suddenly they have everything they need in common.

Those connections are what Field to Field was created to celebrate.

And while we traveled to Kenya hoping to share our love of baseball, people like Oscar reminded us just how much we have to learn and receive in return.

We didn't just gain a talented young coach and teammate.

We gained a friend we can't imagine this project without.

A New Voice for Field to Field

One of the things we've talked about since returning home is how important it is for the stories of Kenyan baseball to be told by the people who are living them.

We can share photographs from our visits and tell you how incredible these athletes and communities are.

But we're only there for a small part of the year.

Oscar is there.

He knows the players, the coaches, the challenges, the celebrations, and all those little moments that make this community so special.

And that's why we're especially excited that Oscar will be helping tell the Field to Field story through social media, photography, videos, and blog posts.

We want you to see Kenyan baseball through his eyes.

The practices, the friendships, the incredible plays, the funny moments, and the everyday dedication that rarely makes it into a highlight reel.

We want you to get to know the young athletes, understand the challenges they face, and celebrate the people who are working so hard to grow the game.

Most importantly, we want those stories to come from the community itself.

Oscar brings a perspective, creativity, and authenticity that no one else could.

And we couldn't be more excited to give him a platform to share it.

Bigger Dreams, Together

As Field to Field continues to grow, our goals are growing too.

We want to support more young athletes, expand opportunities for girls, help teams travel to tournaments, and eventually build a permanent baseball field in Kenya's coastal communities.

But our biggest goal has always been about more than baseball equipment or fields.

It's about investing in people.

Leaders like Oscar are exactly why we believe so strongly in what we're building.

He's proof that when young people are given opportunities, encouragement, and the freedom to use their talents, they can become powerful leaders in their own communities.

And we want Field to Field to be a place where those talents are recognized and celebrated.

Welcome to the Team, Oscar!

Oscar, we hope you know how grateful we are that baseball brought you into our lives.

Thank you for your friendship, your kindness, your laughter, and the incredible energy you bring to our team.

Thank you for caring so much about the kids, for sharing your talents, and for believing in what we're trying to build together.

We're proud of everything you've accomplished already, and even more excited about everything that's still ahead.

We can't wait for our supporters to get to know you, hear your stories, and experience a little more of Kenya through your eyes.

To everyone following our journey, please help us welcome Oscar to the Field to Field team!

You'll be seeing and hearing much more from him in the months ahead.

And trust us, you're going to love him.

Play the game. Share the game. Grow the game.
