The Field We Once Dreamed Of
There was a time when playing baseball in Kenya meant learning to dream without knowing where that dream would take you. You could have the glove, the talent and the passion, but sometimes you didn't even have a proper place to play. Baseball has been part of my life since I was a kid, and what started as simply loving the game became something much bigger. Over the years, I've played in the Kenyan league, won three championships, represented Kenya and had opportunities to showcase my skills at a level I once only imagined.
That's why the Nairobi Field of Dreams@ifwebuildit_org means so much to me. I don't just see a field. I see a place where a kid can pick up a baseball and start imagining a future. A place where coaches teach, teammates become family and young players discover confidence, discipline and purpose.
Through @megansobchuk and the @ujenzifoundation I've also learned that building something meaningful isn't only about what you create physically. It's about the opportunities you create for someone else. I've always dreamed of playing baseball outside Kenya, especially in Japan. That dream is still alive, and I'll keep chasing it. But looking back, I realize that in many ways, my dream has already come true.
The little boy who wanted to play baseball got to play in a league, win championships, represent his country, become a coach, tell stories about the game and help younger players discover the sport that changed his life. Maybe the dream isn't only about where you eventually arrive. Maybe it's everything that happens along the way. The field stays. The lessons stay. And hopefully, the next generation will dream even bigger.
This is Kenyan baseball. This is the Nairobi Field of Dreams. And this is a story about what happens when people build something that gives others a place to dream.
